bridal posy pins and hair clips

how pretty is this? i've been working on a bridal line for a long time now, along with lots of input from my sister-in-law, and here's the first of the products. this posy is made of several layers of beautiful white fabrics, from velvet to twill. i'd call them casually elegant.

here's a shot of the posy as a hairclip. the posy will have a large contour snap clip on the back along with extra tiny metal loops for sticking in extra bobby pins - you know how those stylists use like 40 bobby pins in bridal updo's!

but this posy can also be used on your gown, on a ribbon at the waist, as a detail on the back, an a wrap... how great would three of these be in place of the horrific "butt bow"?

more crayon rolls

these crayon rolls have been flying of the shelf! i have quickly begun to realize that i tend to make way more girly items than boyish ones. so sorry for that! i guess its the 5+ years of creating for a girl that lean my tendencies that way. so i just whipped out 12 more crayon rolls, many gender neutral, some girly ones, and lots of boy ones! i know many of you have been asking for more, so here you go!

each crayon roll is made with 2 coordinating fabrics, with 16 little pockets filled with 16 crayola crayons, and roll up & tie up with a grosgrain ribbon. $17 each

ps - you'll only see 8 more new ones in my shop today because i ran out of crayons - oops! the others will be up soon.

woohoo! another giveaway! i have a sweet blogging friend named jenna, of inspired by jenna, who has a fantastic business called sweet baby creations. jenna and i say that if we lived in the same town we'd proably be best friends: we have really similar tastes and styles, our boys are the same age and equally nutty, and our daily ups and down often seem to be parrallel. its nice to hop on the computer at night and read her blog, only to see that her day was just as crazy as mine. something about that is comforting (is that wrong?).

jenna makes a number of amazing products - mommy bags, diaper clutches, nursing covers, burpies... all from amazing fabrics - and you know i'm super picky about fabric!

just so you all could get to know jenna a little better, we did a little interview:

1. tell me a little about your business - name, products...

I am the owner/creator of *Sweet Baby Creations*, unique handmade baby goodies for precious babies and hip mamas! I sew Nursing Covers, Designer Cotton and Chenille Burpies, Diaper Clutches, Mommy Bag Diaper Bags, Mini Mommy Bags, Pleated Purses and Totes, Changing Blankies, Matching hip Onesies, and hip Toddler Shirts. Depending on what will happen with CPSIA in February, I would like to add Toddler size Minky Blankies and offer zippered pouches for the Mommy Bags.

2. how long have you been in business and how did you get started?

About 3 years ago I started sewing a few burpies for baby shower gifts and got a great response. I decided to take them to a local consignment shop to sell them. One of my girlfriends wanted me to make her a nursing cover, and then another needed a bigger changing pad than the plastic ones you get in your diaper bag, and then I made a diaper clutch for myself because I only needed the diapers and wipes to carry around for my daughter and then my business was born. The more I would make, the more they would sell. My daughter Elliana (who is now 4) was just 18 months at the time and I kept thinking, how am I going to be able to do this with a baby? But things kept growing and I sold my things on ebay, and now have an online boutique *Sweet Baby Creations* on etsy www.inspiredbyjenna.etsy.com . I sell my products locally in two shops and out of my house. Is that kind of like the black market? I do custom orders, gift sets, and take special fabric requests (upon availability.) I always knew I would sell something I made. When I was a little girl I made those friendship bracelets and tried to sell them in my dad’s hair salon. It wasn’t until I became a mother that I found my niche and am able to use my hands to create something special and unique for precious little babies! 3. where do you do most of your work? and how do you fund the time?

I am lucky enough to have a studio where I do all my sewing and crafting. When my son Tucker was smaller I used to sew during the day wearing him in the sling and was super productive. Now that he’s a super active toddler, I mainly sew when he’s sleeping. And naptime during the day usually consists of dishes, laundry, picking up, showering and normal household maintaining. This is also the time I work one on one with my daughter with her “homework” or a special art project. Lately I get in my room as soon as the kids and hubby go to sleep. I need that uninterrupted creative time to get my ideas flowing, or to just get in my groove. I generally stay up way too late and wake up to my little 18 month alarm clock way too early. Caffeine and chocolate keep me going throughout the day. My husband and I have a little joke that I say at night, “well, I’m off to work!” (at 9 o’clock at night!) I love being able to add a little extra income to our family and stay at home with my family AND get my creative time in. Everybody wins!

4. tell me about your family and how they affect your business

My husband is extremely supportive of my craft and understands how necessary it is for me to get my “mommy time.” He is so encouraging in all that I do and supports my business whole-heartedly. My daughter loves being in my sewing room with me doing some sort of “craft-art” and is always asking me to make her something out of a fabric scrap she’s discovered.

5. what is your biggest seller?

My biggest sellers are probably my Nursing Covers and my Mommy Bags. There are all kinds of brands of nursing covers out there, but I think the thing that sets mine apart are the option for adding matching set of Cotton or Chenille Burpies, or a matching Mommy Bag, Diaper Clutch and Changing Blankie. They really make a nice baby gift.

The Mommy Bags have been a great seller too because they are so versatile. They don’t look like diaper bags, and they come in super cute fabrics. But what I love is that once they are done with their diaper bag destiny, they can be a craft tote, book bag, purse, or just that extra catch all bag.

The mini Mommy Bag is a great purse size bag with all the great pockets of the regular size Mommy Bag. It’s great for when you don’t need to carry around the kitchen sink anymore and you just need the diapers and wipes (carried in the Diaper clutch of course!) and a sippy cup and a toy or two. I carry mine around everywhere!

6. where do you find inspiration?

I think one of my biggest inspirations is finding new fabrics. I love shopping for new fabrics, pairing different fabric combinations, and coming home (or opening up a box) of fresh, crisp off the bolt fabric. I love (*read: slightly addicted to*) browsing on etsy and seeing so many creative and talented sellers. I am that person who won’t buy anything if I think I can make it cheaper and cuter and with my own spin on it. So I love gathering ideas from other crafty blogs (like Lindsey’s!) and turning it into my own creation. I also get inspired out of necessity. I love it when friends ask, “can you make something like this?” Or “I need a bag that hold this, can you make it for me?” I love figuring out a new pattern for something. I’m obsessive about it until I get it right. I often say, “oooohh, you know what would be cool….” And I am daily inspired by my children. Wanting a little sling for a baby, a super hero cape, a skirt that twirls just so, or wanting a shirt with pink butterfly on it. I love that I can make things like this for my children.

and how great are these diaper clutches? i so need one of those. i'm at the stage where all i need for the boy is a couple diapers and wipes, yet they get destroyed in my bag along with everything else that accumulates in there. a diaper clutch would help keep things nice and tidy!

new fabric!

i was so excited on friday when my package from sew mama sew came! look at all those pretty colors! i could hardly wait to cut into them.

here's a pic from later friday night when i was able to get out some of my other favorite fabrics, along with the new ones, and mix them all together to make new color combinations. this is probably my most favorite part about this job. i absolutely *love* playing with the fabrics and seeing how i can put together fun pieces. it makes me want to make another quilt.

i have already cut and partially assembled over 15 new zippered pouches with these fabrics. they are super cute! now i just need to finish them... that's one of my biggest struggles: not finishing a project before i move on to the next one. before i started the pouches i also had started 15 or 20 more headbands (lots with brown and black combo's). but those are still left undone, along with the pouches, and a custom order still needs to be filled.

so the plan this week: finish headbands first, then the custom order (i'll have to sneak some pics to you - its gonna be soo cute!), then the zippered pouches. i'll be back later to show some progress.

i still have lots of fabric left. what would YOU like me to make out of it?

new covered notebooks

6 new covered notebooks have been added to the shop! these are all in super fun happy prints that can make even the coldest days a bit warmer. each journal is handmade, fits a standard composition notebook (included), is lined with a white fabric, has a pen/pencil pocket on the left inside flap, and ties closed with grosgrain ribbon. and they are completely removable to be used again and again as you fill up each notebook!

i use grosgrain ribbon on a few of my products (zippered pouches, covered notebooks, crayon rolls) and just got a new shipment of ribbon a couple weeks ago. i was giddy when i opened the package - just look at all that fun color!

a few years ago i stumbled upon a website called ribbons and bows, oh my! and they have unbelievable prices. for a 5 yd. roll like the ribbons above (3/8") its only 99 cents! they have a huge selection of colors, too. i also like their 1 1/2" ribbon for wrapping gifts. go check them out!

my new friend, emily, has just started an etsy shop called blue corduroy, selling her amazing crocheted visor hats. she was one of the vendors at my house last week and she did really well. i had to try really hard to restrain myself from snagging one of her great hats. they are super comfy and soft, and the shape is really flattering. and her prices are great. so far she only has infant and child sized hats available, but keep checking back for the adult ones, too. and she also make the most amazing children's clothing from thrifted linens - so fun! so go check her out and tell her i sent you!

here's just some of the capes i've been working on the past few days. i'm loving how different some of these capes are. its been really fun to work with customers to come up with something that their child/grandchild/niece/nephew will really love.

christmas boutique

i had a space in a christmas boutique last friday and saturday (did you notice my shop was empty?). thankfully i didn't have to drive far (2 blocks) because it made for a very long weekend. my sales were decent, but overall the show was very slow. saturday was nearly dead. my husband brought me my iphone after a couple hours so i could entertain myself.

i'd rather i wasn't actually in that shot above, but i had to hold the papered window up in the back of my booth because i didn't want you to have to look entirely into the booth behind me. no, i don't typically pose like that!

here are just 2 of my many helpers, mom and j. it was awesome to have them around. and when it was time to break down saturday afternoon, we were done and back home in - get this - 17 minutes! i think thats some sort of record.

so here's a peak at all that i was offering at the show, and some of what i'll be putting in my shop. i have 4 sets of these adorable slippers left.

almost all of the headbands sold. they always do better in person. i need a better way to show how adorable they are online. i'm in the process of making more of them.

here's a fun new product i've been dying to try - checkbook covers! they turned out so cute. i only have a handful left, but will be making more of these as well. these are gonna go fast!

the pencil rolls were a huge hit, too. i've only got one left. need to make more, as well.

isn't she just the cutest assistant ever?! we got to have "special time" together each day for a couple hours. she did awesome, after a few times of coaching on how to interact with customers ("when someone is looking at something, don't go walk in front of them and start playing with that something"). she's got the bug to start selling her own things. she's been asking me for months if she could make stuff to sell and i have been gently putting it off (1st idea was paper purses. they're super cute, but really impractical.). but there was a little girl there selling cheesy little foam ornaments (her mom's words, not mine) in her dad's booth, and she was raking it in! who could resist a little girl smiling at you, asking for a buck? maybe next time, gracie. we gotta work on your product line. in my free time. when will that be? who knows, i just made myself a huge task list as i wrote this post!

i have a huge craft show coming this friday and saturday after thanksgiving. finding time to really power through and get my inventory stocked has been really difficult lately. so my dear sweet kind thoughtful loving giving wonderful husband took the kids all day yesterday so i could shut myself up in the playroom at my sewing desk and sew like crazy. all. day. long. it was wonderful, not without its many interruptions, but wonderful nonetheless. here's what i was able to accomplish:

7 covered journals, with a pencil pocket in the inside flap and a ribbon tie closure. these fit perfectly over a standard composition notebook, and are refillable. great for students and anyone who likes to make lists, take notes and doodle (ummmm.... that would be me).

6 checkbook covers, with 2 inside pockets and an elastic band to hold it all shut. so much beter than the boring black one that came with my purse. i must keep one for myself.

4 colored pencil rolls with 10 pencils included, finished with a ribbon tie closure.

3 crayon rolls (so far). once i buy crayons each one will include 12 crayons. perfect in the car for a little artist.

and this was another fun project i thought i'd throw in here. i needed a sign of sorts to help set my booth space apart, so i pieced this banner (?) together with scraps of paper. its a little bigger than i anticipated, but i think it'll still work. sorry for the lousy pics!

and here's a close-up of some of the details - alittle fabric, buttons and tags add some fun embellishment.

christmas! aaahhh! thanksgiving is only a week away, can you believe it? it seems like as soon as halloween ends, christmas is marketed immediately and we basically skip past thanksgiving and dive straight into christmas. don't get me wrong - i love christmas (really, who doesn't?), but poor thanksgiving has to live in it's shadow. and i'm no help either. i'm beginning my mad flurry of production as i have a few boutiques coming up and prepping for holiday orders and my own handmade gifts i'll be giving. i say this every year, but i really should have started sooner!

this little jar (above) holds my ric rac supply and looks strangely similar to my christmas tree - red, pink, and limey green (and a litle turquoise thrown in for good measure) - so fun!

a box full of goodies are heading to the post office today to be shipped of to my mother-in-law's house. a friend of her's is hosting a boutique and she offered to sell some of my products there. how sweet is that?! it so nice to have family super supportive of what i'm doing here.

i came home from picking my daughter up from school today and a package welcomed me at the door. it was filled with all sorts of fabric goodness - wools, tweeds, corduroy all in fabulous fall colors. my best friend, that lives a state away, knows how hard it is for me to find affordable fabric in my area, so she went to her local joannes and stocked up for me. aren't the colors beautiful? i'm especially excited to see how the plum fabrics mix with the rusty orange! so fun!

well, i know it's early, but at least i waited 'til after halloween to put this out! here is my latest batch of posy pins that are perfect for the holidays! i went a little funkier than the classic red and emerald green, and switched it for a limey-er green for a bit more *pop*! these will be great to make most any basic outfit a bit more festive, add to a favorite sweater, or even add to a package as a gift topper. the numbers of these are limited as i'm not sure if i'll be able to get more out any time soon. get 'em while they're still available - $15 for a set of 3.

marisa, from small moments captured, nominated me for a kreativ blogger award! so sweet - thanks, marisa! i'm honored. so with that, i'll play along with the award's callings: answering 7 questions with 7 items under each heading. hmmm.... i'll try!

1. What I Did Before: before what? 3kids? i had 2 kids! ok, really, before i started becoming my current profession as a baby making machine, i had several jobs. my longest was as a faux finisher. i probably did that for 4 years or so, through the end of college and into the beginning of marriage. i burnt out on that due to lots of physical labor, heavy paint fumes, and construction site drama. after that i began a business selling things i refurbished from garage sales, flea markets, and estate sales. that was soooo much fun, but i stopped when i got pregnant. lets be honest - i stopped because i didn't make any money, and i happened to be pregnant, too. i have a really hard time charging more for something than i would pay for myself. ok, thats only 2, 5 more to go: ruby's diner server, office assistant for my hubby, nanny, sterilization technician at my dad's dental office, hostess at a fine dining restaurant. i like my current career the best, BY FAR!

2. What I Do Now: take care of my 3 kids, homeschool 3 days a week, make feeble attempts at house cleaning, craft whenever possible, and run the pleated poppy (a lot more computer time than i expected!)

3. What I'd Like To Do? eat a s'more, make a dent in my piles of unread magazines, finish some of my many unfinished projects, paint my sofa table (how long has it been?!), sleep more, have more patience, yell less.

4. What Attracts Me To My Husband? the way he loves our kids, how hard he works for our family, he supports my crafting habits, he's super active and athletic (seriously very good at every sport! crazy.), the way he pretends he's not ticklish, how dedicated he is to taking care of his physical health, that he encourages me to take care of myself, too.

5. Favorite Food: cookies, brownies, snickers, sushi, pizza, rootbeer floats, ice cream. can you tell a have a sweet tooth?

6. What I Say Most Often: "silas, get of the table!", "gentle hands!", "hey babe...", "when will you be home?", "be kind", "can you get silas down?", "eat your food!".

how to use a posy pin:

welcome to all of you who have flown over from the nesting place! i hope you enjoy your time here and come back to visit often.

one of my biggest sellers are the posy pins. posy pins are little flowered brooches made from several layers of various fabrics, topped by a chubby covered button and finished off with a bar pin in the back. there are so many uses for them, so i thought i'd do a little demonstration on the many uses of a posy pin.

first off, and probably my favorite use, is on a "beater". ok, totally not a pc term, but we all call them that, right? these tanks are the staple of my wardrobe, along with jeans. what better way to "cute-ify" a simple basic outfit than to slap on a posy? well, maybe don't slap it on, it does have a pin on the back. be careful!

but really, why stop at one when you can wear 3?!?

but one still looks cute, too.

and to add a little life to a boring winter coat, these little posies will happily do the job!

another winter staple are scarves. why not funk them up a bit and scatter a few posies on them. so unexpected, yet it totally works.

a simple way to add a little extra drama to a basic bag is to pin on a posy.

ok, so this bag already has enough drama on its own, but how cute does it look with some extra oomph? btw, as cute as the bag is, i never use it. it barely even holds a diaper. maybe in a couple years...

how great are the posies on a pillow? and the great thing about this is that it is totally temporary. if you want to add a posy to your jacket for the day, just pull it off your couch!

maybe you're throwing a birthday party and want to add some extra color. add some posies!

or maybe its a baby shower. soften things up with some pastel posies. these would also be great as...

gift topppers! how fun is that? not only are you giving a gift, but making the gift look better. and since the posies come in sets of 3, you get to keep 2 for yourself!

and last, but not least, you can add the posies to picture frames to draw a little extra attention. i just made a little loop of masking tape and stuck it to the back of the pin. yeah, the adorable little girl definitely adds to the look, too. but where is her posy hair clip? who is her mama?

so this is what my trash can next to my sewing desk most often looks like. kind of pretty actually? i really throw away such a very little amount of fabric, using every last little bit i can.

my girls came up with a little project to use even the pieces i deemed unusable. a little construction paper, glue, and mommy's "trash", and viola! art! well... at least it kept them busy for a bit.

i LOVE the way these fall posies turned out! many of the fabrics really fluffed up and made very full posies. i love how the tweed looks with the cotton fabrics, and how using men's suiting materials makes these posies suddenly seem ready for cooler weather.

many of these have warm, fallish colors, while others have cooler tones. i've made up sets of three, some of the warm tones, some cool, and some are a mix. i also have lots of sets of the multi-colored posies that are really great year-round.

i got some great new fabric to make some fall and winter versions of the posy pins. these wools, corduroys, and tweeds just say "warmth" to me. don't you think a nice cozy posy would warm up a dull peacoat or fancy up a plain beanie? or maybe a couple attached to the ends of a thick scarf. how i can think about wearing a scarf today is pretty amazing, considering its nearing 100 degrees again today (98 yesterday!). but in your neck of the woods, fall may already be in full swing. check back soon to see when these babies are up for sale!

coming out of hibernation

i'm still here, and about to come out of my hole, i mean home. i've been crafting away like a nut the last few weeks, producing i'm sure way too much stuff for the harvest festival that starts TOMORROW!!! if you're local, please stop by and visit joy and i this friday and saturday at the harvest festival in downtown AG. it would be so fun to see some familiar faces, although i am really looking forward to some kid free time with just joy. we really never get that, you know, uninterrupted conversation. a novelty. anyhoo, the fest begins friday at 4 until 9, then again saturday from 10 until 5. i think there's a parade going on at 9 on saturday, which i heard is great, in a down-home sort of way. we'll be in booth #117.

here's a sneak peek of what will be there. some of it is pretty standard, but there are a few new products, too, that i'm really excited about. and remember, whatever doesn't sell this weekend will slowly be put up for sale at the pleated poppy. oh, and did i forget to mention that my incredibly talented sister designed my business logo for me? do you love it as much as i do!?! she has put in a formal request that i stop being her client for awhile and get back to just being her sister. i think i can manage that, well, maybe after this weekend is over ;) .

i've only got two of these sweet covered journals, but more are on their way! they are standard composition books slipcovered in great fabrics, with a ribbon tie closure and have a sweet surprise on the inside - a pencil pocket! the best part about these is that once the journal is filled, just remove the cover and slip in a new one! not only are these great for students, but also great for me! i'm a list maker and note taker, so something this size is so much better for me than all my tiny scraps of paper. these first 2 are a little more grown up, but still youthful and fun.

i'm so glad you've found the Pleated Poppy!

let me introduce myself: i'm lindsey. i'm most defined in my role as a stay at home mom of three kiddos: gracie is 5, lily is almost 3, and silas just turned 1. i've been married to my entrepreneur husband, sean, for 8 years now (wow!). i'm involved in my church (women's ministry, mom's group, and seasonal decor), but most of my time is spent at home. to offset how much i give myself to the kids, i like to be crafty and creative as a personal (let's be honest: selfish) outlet.
